Many software developers tend to forget the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle – especially when that important release is near. So let me tell you some everyday tips to improve your mental and physical health.

Replace Processed Juice with Natural or Homemade Smoothies

One of the best ways to consume liquids naturally, healthily and “raw” is to make homemade juices. Refrain from buying pre-made juices in your supermarket full of added sugar and additives. When making homemade juices and smoothies, you know all the ingredients included, and can adapt the flavouring to your liking. This is a great way to get your micronutrients in, including the delivery of vital minerals, vitamins and antioxidants to your body, this will keep your body functioning the way it should.

Replace Soda with Carbonated Water or Tea

Can of soda can be very tempting on those short breaks, however it is best to stay away from them if possible. Soda is packed with additives that interfere with your bodily functions and contain an excessive amount of sugar, all things that can lead to health problems such as obesity and diabetes. When trying to cut out soda, you may veer towards drinking low calorie soda or calorie free soda – yes, this is a better alternative from calorie intake point of view, but in terms of overall health there are better options out there. Replace your daily can of soda with a cup of tea, or flavoured tea to keep your taste buds guessing, and you will notice immediate results in your body. You will see instant benefits such as increased energy, meaning you won’t be as tired, it will also benefit your blood sugar levels keeping them at a more stable rate.

Drink Plenty of Water

It is important to stay hydrated throughout the day, as dehydration can lead to all sorts of health problems. Studies have shown that a high number of people, roughly 60%, are chronically dehydrated without even knowing they are! This is unbelievable as drinking water is one of the most under rated and overlooked ways to get your body feeling and looking its best. It is recommended that men drink roughly 125oz of water a day (nearly 4 litres) and for women slightly at 91oz (nearly 3 litres). Experiment to find out how much your body needs to feel and look better. If you are tired of drinking endless glasses of favour-less water every day, you can add some lemon or frozen fruit to make it more interesting and enjoyable – often referred to as “infused water”, give it a try!

Take a Rest

A high number of people feel that in order to feel their best they must continuously be “on the go” and be overly successful in everything they do. This can lead to stress, which in turn can lead to over eating, over drinking and many other bad habits. Sometimes it’s a good thing to take some time to yourself and wind-down. Take long bubble bath, go for a walk, or take an overdue weekend away with a loved one(s). Treat yourself every now and then!
